He was a member of the Complaints Review Tribunal (since renamed the Human Rights Review Tribunal) from 1994 to 2000, sitting as an additional member of the High Court in L v T (1998) 5 HRNZ 30.
Since 1998 he has been a member of the New Zealand Council of Law Reporting.
He was a member of the Wellington District Law Society Constitutional Affairs Committee in 1987, of its Legislation and Law Reform Committee from 1988 to 1994, of its Courts Committee from 1995 to 2009, and itsPublic Law Committee from 2005 to 2009. He remains a member of the Courts and Public Law Committees of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Law Society.
He was co-opted to the New Zealand Law Society working party on take-overs to contribute his expertise on remedial systems and processes.
He was a member of the Department of Courts Working party on Computerisation of Court Procedures in 1993.
He has been a member of the NZ Centre for Public Law Advisory Committee since its inception
He was Chairman of the NZ Society of Legal and Social Philosophy, Wellington Branch for 1995-6.
He was a member of the Australian Broadcasting Commission Advisory Committee for Victoria, Australia, from 1973 to 1977.
He was President of the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand (then called Counterstroke) for five years from 1984 to 1989 and for one year from 1990 to 1991
He was the Chairman of the Disabled Persons Assembly Foundation for six years from 1989 to 1995.
He was a member of the NZ National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability Services Ethics for 1995 and 1996.
He was active in Wellington Junior and, later, Secondary Schools cricket in 1987 to 1988 and 1990 to 2001.
He has been active in the community and organisational life of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish since 1982.
